Red Canyon in Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
The Green is 730 miles long and after meandering through southwestern Wyoming, enters the canyons of northern Utah where Flaming Gorge is located. William Ashley and one group of seven of his men were the first in recorded history to descend the river in 1825.
The lands near this area are now named Ashley National Forest in his honor. Just before the Green River enters into the canyons, Ashley designated a spot near where Henry's Fork enters the Green as the first Rendezvous site. It was held July 1, 1825 and was the start of the Rendezvous system.
